Reported via mobile in the Pavement Defect category anonymously at 14:00, Thu 12 December 2024

Sent to Camden Borough Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6854479.

Some workmen just replaced some paving with tarmac that they levelled by stepping on it. Ugly and inappropriate.

Updates

  • Please see the attached photo. The use of asphalt to patch an area surrounded by potentially historic paving slabs is completely inappropriate. This not only appears visually disruptive but also directly contradicts Camden Council’s own guidance, as outlined in the Streetscape Design Manual (November 2000).

The manual emphasises that repairs in conservation areas must use materials that match the existing paving to preserve the area’s historic character. Specifically, Section 5.2, “Surface Materials,” highlights the importance of maintaining the integrity and visual continuity of the streetscape. The use of asphalt clearly does not comply with this standard.

Moreover, as mentioned in the original report, the workman completing this repair simply leveled the asphalt by standing on it, which demonstrates a concerning lack of care and quality control. This level of workmanship is unacceptable, particularly in a conservation area where high standards must be upheld to protect the historical and aesthetic value of the streetscape.

We kindly request confirmation of when this inappropriate repair will be rectified using materials that align with Camden Council’s guidelines. I would also appreciate reassurances that future maintenance work in the area will meet the necessary standards.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

  • Another section in the same area has been repaired using the same subpar method.
