Outside St. Lukes Church / SLS / Craxton Studios

Reported via mobile in the Road Defect category anonymously at 16:57, Mon 8 January 2024

Sent to Camden Borough Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 5415332.

This end of Kidderpore Avenue simply does not work as a functioning road. At busy times it is mayhem with gridlocked traffic, constant beeping of car horns and regular arguments, accidents and even fights between frustrated drivers. With the new pavement outside the church this is effectively a single-track road with enough space for only 1 direction of traffic. Cars unknowingly turning into the road consistently get stuck at this bottleneck causing gridlock as other cars turn into the road behind them stopping cars from pulling out onto Platts Lane and thus blocking everyone in...it is an absolutely stupid system. In addition, these cars, unable to progress up the road against the long stream of oncoming traffic are even unable to turn around, literally blocking themselves in and blocking up the road. I live overlooking this mess and every morning and evening it is complete mayhem, god forbid if there are tube strikes or roadworks on Finchley Road. Surely this section must be made one-way or even a low traffic neighbourhood...there is a school there after all!

I see another report at this location complaining about the widened pavement outside the church and the resultant loss in parking spaces. Personally I think the widened pavement is good idea because it drastically increases the safety of the children and parents of St. Lukes School as well as visitors to the church. Often there are large groups of people waiting / gathering here. Perhaps the (very useful) e-bike parking space could be moved onto the pavement here, freeing up an extra parking space on the road?

Either way, these safety improvements are often rendered useless as drivers frequently mount the pavement and drive up it as they have no hope of passing the oncoming traffic on the single track road or turning around...they have no choice. How this has not been made a one-way section, a low traffic neighbourhood or even completely pedestrianised is beyond me. Its absolutely mental and often sounds more like Mumbai than Hampstead...I have many videos to prove this. Please do something
