Cycle lane eastbound opposite St.Athans hotel

Reported via desktop in the Roadworks category anonymously at 10:03, Wed 28 June 2023

Sent to Camden Borough Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4725814.

There are works going on in one of the buildings by this location and a portion of the street has apparently been cordoned off for works vehicles. This has been the case for months (it may have started with actual road works but have not seen any for a long time). The resulting traffic management scheme is unsafe, putting cyclists at serious risk.

The aerial picture attached attempts to explain the problem. Key, yellow circle = problem area, red arrow = traffic pulling across bike lane, green = cordoned area causing traffic flow safety issue, blue = this road furniture no longer here.

The traffic scheme at the time the attached aerial photo was taken was good, as was the bike lane in your aerial photo on this website. Now however it is very unsafe. It forces cars going east to pull across the bike lane. The bike lane does have give way markings, although during use these are not obvious. I have seen numerous near misses of vehicles suddenly pulling in to where a cyclist is riding, one instance with a lorry that I thought was centimeters away from a fatality. Whilst in theory bikes should stop, wait for cars, then continue, this in practice is not at all obvious and users who were used to the continuous lane before (including myself) may not have realised the change. Cyclists are obviously much more vulnerable than vehicles, and this road layout seems to be an accident waiting to happen (if one hasn't already happened!).

Please could you address this issue at your earliest convenience.

Many thanks, Hector
